Finding A Counselor When You Do Not Have Insurance or Otherwise Cannot Afford It In case of emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest hospital. If you need mental health crisis services, please call 988. Please note that I cannot control or be responsible for third party links. Nor can I guarantee that what a provider charges will be affordable for you. I am just trying to share my knowledge of the mental health care system and hopefully make the search easier for you. Tips Generally, you need a provider licensed in the state that you are physically located in. Some providers may be licensed in multiple states. If you have questions, please ask before making an appointment. Please ask about any eligibility restrictions. Agencies may offer financial assistance, but it may be based on your residency (ie: county you live in) or other criteria. If you are wanting telehealth, ensure that you select that as a search option. Please ask if they require any in person visits or if you can do 100% of your sessions via telehealth (teletherapy). Registered Interns (RMHCI, RMFT, RCSW) may charge less. While they have their Master's Degree, they do not have full independent licensure yet and so they work under a licensed supervisor. Therefore, in some circumstances a person may want to see a fully licensed independent provider instead. Frequently Asked Questions I am so confused/ overwhelmed with trying to start counseling. Can you help me? I am happy to answer general questions about the process. However, if you do not want to reach out generally the best place to start is with your insurance company/ EAP. Find an in network provider and then you can do an online search to check provider profiles/ websites to find the best fit for you. How do I know what type of provider to see? Psychiatrists (MD/ DO), Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners (ARNP), Physician Assistant (PA) can assess for the need for medication and prescribe it if needed. Psychologists, Licensed Mental Health Counselors (LMHC), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFT), and Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW) provide counseling services, but each has a somewhat different educational background. What insurances do you take? MDLIVE providers are often in network with major insurance carriers such as Cigna, Humana, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, and GEHA to name a few. The best way to ensure that I am in network with your specific health plan is to register on the MDLIVE website or app. You will only be shown in network providers. You can find me by using the "Search for Provider" option. If you do not see the day/ time you need, you can try the "Request an Appointment" option. Alternatively, you can call MDLIVE customer service at 1-800-400-6354 for assistance. What phone number should I use? MDLIVE Customer Service can be reached at 1-800-400-6354. They help with insurance questions. If people prefer to call to schedule their appointment, this is the best way to do it. My direct number is 407-850-8130. This is exclusively for new clients to contact me with questions. For existing MDLIVE patients, they can securely message me through the MDLIVE system or they can call Customer Service. Customer Service is able to notify me that a patient needs me to call them, however, depending on the request they may be able to directly assist you. Please note that I can only respond to existing patients through the MDLIVE phone and messaging systems. What if I do not have insurance or I do not want to use it? Patients are able to self-pay. The MDLIVE website will have the most up-to-date pricing. As of 1/2025, self-paying for a session out of pocket is $179 for the initial intake session and $140 for follow up sessions. I do not have insurance or I cannot afford to self-pay. Do you offer sliding scale or financial assistance? At this time, MDLIVE does not offer sliding scale options. I am exclusively providing counseling services through MDLIVE, so I do not have the ability to offer these options myself. However, I can provide tips and resources for finding a provider who does. I prefer to communicate via email or text. What is your contact information? Due to confidentiality, I do not communicate with patients via insecure email/ text. If you use the MDLIVE request an appointment feature, I will send you a secure message and you will be able to reply back. If you schedule an appointment, I generally open the messaging after the first appointment. If you need a call back, you can request that. However, please note that MDLIVE is not a crisis service. If you are in crisis, please call a crisis hotline such as 988. I am an active patient, but my messaging is currently closed, how can I reach you? Due to best practices and safety reasons, messaging does not remain open indefinitely. Please use the MDLIVE request an appointment feature because that prompts me to send you a message. Counseling Services Teletherapy / Telemental Health Counseling Depending upon your insurance requirements and your preferences, sessions are conducted online through MDLIVE's secure video platform or via phone/ audio only. We do recommend video sessions for a more thorough assessment. Individual therapy sessions for adults (those who are at least 18 years old) Common reasons for seeking treatment include ADHD, Anxiety, Dealing with Chronic Health Issues/ Pain, Depression, Mood Disorders, Stress, Work Life Balance Services I Do Not Provide Emergency situations (risk of harm to self or others) - please call 911 or go to the hospital. Crisis services - please call a crisis hotline at 988, go to the hospital, or call 911. MDLIVE does not offer in person therapy services, but Outside Providers do. Severe conditions are best treated in person and not through telehealth. If you have health insurance, you can look at the list of in network providers to find a provider who offers in person therapy. I do not offer therapy services for minors - some MDLIVE Providers do see children ages 10 and up. MDLIVE does not treat substance use issues that cannot be safely treated through telehealth (ie: need medical detox) I do not offer couples therapy. MDLIVE focuses on individual therapy, but the therapist can advise you on if couples therapy is more appropriate and some do list it as a specialty of theirs, so they could tell you more about it. Telehealth cannot adequately treat psychosis, which is when someone is actively seeing/ hearing things that are not there or they have false beliefs/ delusions. Therefore, we recommend in person treatment to best address these issues. MDLIVE does not treat moderate to severe autism spectrum disorders. At this time, MDLIVE does not offer any group therapy services, but it may be available at a future date. If you want group therapy, some in person providers will offer it.
